Genealogy Research Resources to Explore!
Family First!
Your greatest and (usually) your most accessible genealogy research resource. Start at the very beginning with what you already know about your family. Ask relatives and friends, those who knew you or your family years ago.
- What records do your family have?
- Are there birth, marriage or death certificates?
- Are you lucky enough to have a family Bible?
- What family stories do you have?
Health Warning! Check it all out - sometimes that family story can be wrong or wishful thinking!
Is there a family history society in your area?
Pool your knowledge about genealogy research resources. As well as being a great place to make friends and learn about genealogy you might find someone already researching part of your family and willing to share information.
What records are available in the locality?
Family history societies and local libraries are great sources of genealogy research information. You will often find:
- civil registration documents - eg birth, marriage, deaths
- census records - who was where and when eg. 1900 Census. Search virtually door-to-door across America with this Genealogy.com exclusive!

- IGI fiche - for details of marriages and christenings
- details of wills - who left what and to whom?
- local industry - owners and employees
- landowners and those who worked for them
- legal system records - for those skeletons in the cupboard
- local and national newspapers - for news items of the past
